Eco Driving Tips. How An Apple Falling From A Tree Can Help You Drive More Energy Efficiently.

People are going to various lengths to minimise their impact on the environment. But not everyone can afford electric cars, solar panels and heat pumps. What if I told you you could do something that doesn't cost a thing and actually saves you money!
The fact is we can all make small changes to our driving that can collectively make a missive difference to our carbon footprint, that also offer the added bonus of actually saving us money and making us safer drivers.
Driving more fuel efficiency may sound difficult, but considering just TWO things before you put that foot down on the gas or brake and you'll be surprised how affective and easy it is.
First and foremost... keep in mind that without the engine your car is just a box on wheels, it rolls down hill and needs power to go up. Simple yeah!
Secondly... even if you don't read any further than this paragraph, this one thing will make a huge difference to fuel economy, vehicle upkeep costs and safety. Ask yourself constantly as you drive... "How will gravity affect my momentum?" Then use it!
Here some more specific things to consider...
Does your car need gas moving off? You might be surprised to know that most petrol cars less than 10 years old are designed to move off using just clutch control.
Do you really need to get up to 20 or 30mph as quickly as possible? You'll probably just have to slow down for the next junction or light anyway.
Can you look further ahead while you drive? If you find that you often have to brake sharply the answer is probably yes.
Are you reading the changes in road gradient? Did I mention gravity! Coming of the gas early to minimise braking going down hill and gently adding gas to maintain a more constant speed before going up will save you fuel therefore less emissions.
Do you anticipate signs, the changing of lights and changes in speed limit, asking yourself has that light been green a while or is there a person approaching that crossing?
Can you use a lower gear while driving down hill (engine braking) to restrict speed and minimise braking.
There's loads more but this is just the basics to get you thinking.
Ps. Going into neutral while going downhill does not save you fuel.
Thanks for reading.
