Sighthill, Wester Hailes, Baberton, Broomhouse and The Calders are ideal spots for advanced beginners practicing; meet situations, forward planning, anticipation and adequate clearance, due to the narrow roads, restricted views, parked cars and relatively constant flow of daytime traffic.

 

Murrayburn and Clovenstone are excellent areas for first-time and beginner drivers. Clovenstone Gardens, in particular, is a great place to practise basic pedal control and road positioning, thanks to its low speeds, light traffic, and minimal number of parked cars. There is also a bus service in operation which offers additional coaching opportunities. Murrayburn and Hailesland Road allows progression to driving at slightly higher speeds and gears with more traffic and wider roads, without the distraction of parked cars. The road layout lends itself nicely to learning junctions with repetition, over various gradients. The perfect training area for learning the subtilty of clutch and brake control, understanding of up and down gear changing and where to look to maintain correct road position.

Calder Road, Wester Hailes Road and South Gyle gives both an introduction to basic roundabouts and lane changing. Progressing on to some of the busiest roads and roundabouts in Edinburgh, which often feature on the driving test routes at the Currie Test Centre
